Hi, I’m Ashlee from
Capernaum Home. I am so honored to be posting today on Make a Difference Monday here at Simply Enchanted! Today I’d like to share a small way to make a difference in a child’s life this holiday season.
First I should tell you that I have five older siblings, all their spouses, nine nieces and nephews, and my parents. That would make for A LOT of Christmas gifts to buy which thankfully, none of us thought was necessary. Once our family grew so much, we needed to start a new tradition that didn't involve spending tons of money on gifts none of us needed anyways. The answer? A wonderful program called
Operation Christmas Child put on by
Samaritan's Purse. If you are not familiar with Operation Christmas Child, it provides Christmas gifts in shoe boxes to children in need all over the world.

So every year, each person in my family buys one girl gift and one boy gift. We bring it to our Christmas gathering, show everyone what we are donating, put it in the appropriate shoe box, wrap up the boxes, and pray for the children who will be receiving them together as a family. The deadline for sending the boxes is actually before Christmas, so we always save that year's gifts and send them the next year, but it still works out great. And it has been such a neat way to not focus on getting presents for ourselves and instead giving to those in need. I have put together an example of how to pack a shoe box for you. This example is for a 4-9 year old girl, but there are other age ranges to to pick from which are listed on their website. First you need to load up on some small gifts for the child including things like toys (think Dollar Tree!), candy, toiletries, etc. Just be sure to read the guidelines on the website to make sure you buy the accepted type of items.

Next, wrap and pack your shoe box! Be sure to read about certain rules on the website such as double bagging all candy. You are also encouraged to include a small donation of $7 for shipping.
Lastly, print out a label and mark the age and gender and place it on top of the box. Put a rubber band around it and take it to a donation center.
Easy and fun, right? I hope you will consider participating in Operation Christmas Child and bless a child on the other side of the world who otherwise would not be receiving any Christmas gifts. Visit
Operation Christmas Child’s website for detailed instructions and make it a part of your holiday this year, even start this tradition in your family!
